March 24, 2016

Just confirmed more details for the mid-term test: (a) it will be held on Thursday April 7 at night, (b) there will be formula sheet provided and it will be available to you before the mid-term, AND (c) EQUITY VALUATION CHAPTER WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE MID-TERM TEST. That means we will need another make up class to finish the equity valuation chapter.

We are having the make up class on Thursday March 31 6pm to 8pm (being booked now) and Monday April 4 6pm to 8pm (being booked now). I will go through the same material so you would only need to attend one of these two sessions. The first hour will be used to finish the equity valuation chapter, the second hour will be used to go through the practice questions.

There is also a mid-term review session from 7am to 9am on Wednesday April 6 to go through practice questions on bonds and equity valuation for the mid-term test to be held on Thursday April 7 at night. If there are questions that you would like me to go through, please let me know; in the mean time, I will post the answer to the recommended practice questions for each chapter.

I will finish the equity valuation chapter and worked through practice questions, then go through assignment one questions. If time allows, I will start on the mid-term test review.

I have also booked Classroom E201 on April 6 from 7am to 9am for the mid-term review if required.

This is the announcement for the mid-term test:

  Dear all in FM Session,

Please be informed that the mid-term test will be conducted on April 7th (Thursday), 7:00 - 9:00 pm, in room C303 (for our class).

This is a close-book test, covering up to Lecture 5 (Stock valuation). There are two parts of the test: Part A consists of 15 MCQs, with 30 marks in total; Part B consists of four problems on lecture 2 to 5 respectively. The allocation of marks among the lectures is roughly even, except that less (only 12 marks) is allocated to Lecture 1.

You need to bring at least a regular scientific calculator. You are allowed to bring a financial calculator, although all the calculations can be done with a regular scientific calculator. You are NOT allowed to bring any other electronic devices, i.e. devices with more than the calculator function, such as your mobile phone.

A sheet of formulae (attached) will be provided in the test, so that you can focus on understanding rather than memorizing in your preparation."

The formula sheet that will be provided in the test can be downloaded here.

March 30, 2016 The scope for the mid-term test for all the FM classes provided by Dr. Lu yesterday can be downloaded here.

April 5, 2016
When the make up class was held last Thursday and this Monday night, we were able to go through and finished Chapter 10 on equity valuation. In addition, we were able to go through Assignment One answers and also some questions for mid-term review.

In addition, I was not able to book the classroom from 7am to 8am due to UIC policy.

As a result, the mid-term review for Wednesday April 6 will not be held because it was done during the last make up class. The answer key for Assignment One, the review questions and a document on the scope of the mid-term test (just released by Dr. Lu on Saturday) are available on my website for this class.

April 14, 2016 SLSS is availabe since March if you want to attend. It is being taught by our TA every Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm at SHCV, Block 4, 1/F, DBM Training Center (CCM room).

April 24, 2016 Assignment Two can be downloaded here. Assignment Two is due on Friday May 6 at 3pm.

April 26, 2016 Just informed by the course convener that Assignment Two can be submitted by Friday May 13 instead of May 6 (due one week later). Hence please use the same Assignment Two question distributed April 24 but due date should be May 13 3pm instead of May 6 as noted on the question sheet.

May 9, 2016 May 23 Monday will be our final exam review time as make up for the public holiday on May 2. We will have class at the same time and same classroom as our normal classes.

May 16, 2016 The final examination of our class (Session 10) will be held on Monday May 30, 2016 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in Room B302.

May 17, 2016 This review note document was provided by the course convener just now on the scope of the final exam. The convener also informed us that there will be more details on the final exam in the next few days and I will post these details here once I received them. The review notes summary can be downloaded here.

May 18, 2016 The following was announced by the course convener this evening. A formula sheet will be provided to you as a sample in the next day or so.
"Dear students of FM Session 10,

The final examination for Financial Management will be conducted on May 30th. Please refer to AR announcement for the specific time and venue of the exam.

This will be a 3-hour, close-book examination, covering all the chapters learned. Part A contains 10 MCQ¡¦s, 2 marks each, 20 marks total. They are mostly from Chapters not covered in Part B. Part B, totaling 80 marks, consists of seven questions respectively from the following chapters: Ch 4 (8 marks), Ch 5 (12 marks), Ch 9 (12 marks), Ch 10 (11 marks), Ch 8 (14 marks), Ch 12 (14 marks), and Ch 17 (9 marks). The style of Part B questions is similar to that of the assignments.

You need to bring either a regular scientific calculator, or a financial calculator, or both. One is enough; the questions are designed in such a way that you can use either type of calculator to solve (just as for the mid-term test). Other electronic devices such as mobile phone are prohibited. In order for you to focus on understanding rather than memorizing in preparation, the attached formulae sheet will be provided to you in the exam.

Best wishes"

May 19, 2016 Similar to the mid-term test, a formula sheet will be provided for the final examination. It will be attached as part of your examination paper. You can download a sample of the formula sheet here.

May 20, 2016 AR had booked Room B201 for us for Monday, May 23 class.

May 23, 2016 The final exam review questions can be viewed here.

May 26, 2016 If you are using a financial calculator for the final examination, please put in the number used for each input into the financial calculator (e.g. PV = 3000, i = 8%, etc) so that the marker will know what the input are so that marks can be given. If you only put in the final answer without any formula or input to the financial calculator, then if even one of the input is incorrect and you got the wrong answer, no partial marks can be given since the input are not there. However, if you have all the input provided, you will still receive partial marks for input that are correct.
